Registering and My Account

Registering and My Account

Your first step is to register with Mashery and create the account you will use to log in to all Mashery-powered sites. Creating an account is easy, but there are a few things to understand before you get started.

About Your Mashery Account

Your Mashery account is your gateway to API goodness. It gives you single sign on to all Mashery-powered sites and lets you manage all of your relationships around APIs from one place. Gone are the days where you have to remember a unique username and password for each provider's site. Once you have a Mashery account, you can use it to sign in to any Mashery-powered site. At each first sign in to a new provider you will need to opt into sharing your information with that provider (see linking).

It gets better: Coming soon, you will have access to a Developer Dashboard where you can view updates to the content and services for each of your Service Providers, view responses to your comments, and get reports on how your applications are being used, with metrics and performance information.

Registering a Mashery Account with Mashery Authentication

  1. Click Register.
  2. On the Registration page, enter your first and last name and your email address. You must use a valid email address to register. New registrations must be activated before your account is set up. You will receive an activation URL via email.
  3. Choose a username and a display name. The username is used to log into the Mashery system. The display name is used if you post comments for a Service Provider's content.
  4. Choose a password and enter it again to confirm it.
  5. (Optional) You can also provide additional information such as your Instant Messaging ID, your website, blog, phone number, and company name.
  6. Click Register. You will receive an email with a link that will complete your registration.
  7. Activate your account and you are set to go. You can dive right into the Service Provider's Portal, or register for API Keys from the Service Provider (if offered).

Registering a Mashery Account with TypeKey Authentication

  1. You must have or create/activate a TypeKey account, login from the sign in box and accept the information sharing. You will then be directed to your My Account page to review the information we have received from TypeKey and complete any missing fields. Once you click Save, you will then receive an activation email.
  2. Select Sign in.
  3. Within the Sign in window, select TypeKey tab. You will see a TypeKey logo. Enter your TypeKey username and password. Click Sign In.
  4. Review the information we have received from TypeKey and complete any missing required fields. (Optional) You can also provide additional information such as your Instant Messaging ID, your website, blog, phone number, and company name.

About Linking to Mashery-powered Portals

Mashery is not only about getting access to great Web Services provided by the Web's most innovative companies, but it is also about relationships. Web Services are a way for companies to expose their data to you for you to play with and create - they do that because they are interested in you. You are interested in them because the best way to make the most of each API is to interact with the folks who make it. We help make that connection as useful as it could possibly be.

Linking with a Service Provider associates your Mashery account with that Portal, so that you can comment and interact on the site. It also gives providers the information they need to grant you access to their APIs and issue you keys.

Linking with Your First Mashery-powered Portal

Normally when you register (either via Mashery or a Third Party Authentication Provider) you will do so on a Service Provider's portal. In those cases, you will be linked with them immediately. You can remove this link at any time from your My Account page.

Linking with Other Mashery-powered Portals

Once you have a Mashery account, linking to a new Service Provider is as easy as signing in. When visiting a Portal where you want to make a comment, for example, you will start the linking process by selecting Sign in from the upper right user menu. You will see the sign in box, and need to select either Mashery or TypeKey. Enter your login information. You will then be directed to an information share acceptance screen where you opt into sharing your Mashery account data with this Provider. Click Yes and you will be logged in to the site and ready to comment or sign up for an API key. You will be linked with them immediately and can remove this link at any time from your My Account page.

About Sharing Information

The minimum information you must share to link accounts is your first and last name and an email address. No other information is shared with Service Providers unless you provide it. Your My Account page is where you control your relationships with Service Providers and the information you share with them. Providing optional information like IM contact, phone or websites/blogs gives them other ways to contact you. You might want to share that information so that if your application goes nuts they could contact you, or maybe they will love your work and want to hire you! Also providing profile information will enable other Mashery users to contact you for collaboration or to pitch projects. Not all information sharing is scary, and we do our best to ensure our Service Providers have robust privacy policies - we even have a sample Privacy Policy for them to customize. Read each provider's privacy policy carefully.

About Authentication Options

We love APIs and innovative projects ourselves. We are supporting Third Party Authentication (TPA) via tools such as TypeKey and OpenID (coming soon) to help you minimize even more of the passwords and information stores you need to maintain. With TypeKey you must create and activate a TypeKey account and your sign in flow is a bit different. See Registering a New Mashery Account with TypeKey Authentication. Note that if you use a TPA you will need to change or retrieve your password through their interfaces.
